Late afternoon in the country tribal town of Turmi this man laid motionless as others walked past. A pub was only a few metres away so assuming he had had a little too much to drink!

APA AWARDS 2018 - VILLAGE LIFE

2nd place - portrait category

The judges comments are below and are on the APA Awards website

“Jayne McLean has successfully brought to us a unique take on African life with this stunning and exuberant seen moment from a Dassanech Village. The man in this photograph could not be more perfect, as he strikes a pose as if he were on a runway in Milan. He boldly faces the camera, confident in himself and his ensemble. The children passing by, who find this man absolutely ordinary and the photographer completely fascinating provide a great counterbalance in the scene by providing a rawer interpretation of village life.

The background and square crop are used well to frame the scene and provide additional information about life in the Dassanech Village. The front-most cow provides a nice touch by mooing at an opportune moment, while a bystander walks past between huts providing a perfect balance to all people in frame.

Technically the photographer has also done extremely well to capture shadow detail and detail in the faces of the villages in difficult lighting.”

Bull Jumping Ceremony, Ethiopia

APA AWARDS 2018 - FAMILY PRIDE AND PROTECTION

FINALIST AND HONOURABLE MENTION - DOCUMENTARY CATEGORY

The bull jumping ceremony for the Hamer tribe in Ethiopia is a rite of passage for a man. The female relatives of the bull jumper (except his mum) request to be whipped by men who have recently had their ceremony but not yet wed. The females show their devotion to the bull jumper by being whipped on their backs - they take great pride in their scars and it is expected that he will then protect them for life.

Our early arrival to this village of the Mursi Tribe was perfect - everyone slowly getting ready to start the day and this boy staying warm by his fire. Once he had warmed up he turned into a super cheeky and delightful boy full of mischief and character. An absolutely beautiful morning with these amazing people.

Magnificent beauty - the amazing Jokulsarlon Lagoon in SouthEast Iceland is breathtaking. Still blue waters with Icebergs breaking off from the glacier and slowly heading through the short waterway to the Atlantic Ocean.

Like the most unbelievable dream, this black sand beach which is affectionately known as Diamond Beach is littered with ice and icebergs of all shapes and sizes. The most amazing beach I have ever been to - just incredible. I photographed at the beach during sunshine, rain and storms and all days were truly memorable and incredible!

Piggy back Elephants

You never know what you’ll see on safari - every day is so different! It was quite a surprise to see elephants making baby elephants this afternoon on a boat in the Chobe River, Botswana! The guide also said she’d never seen it before. I love how the elephants walked in opposite directions when they were finished. Ha! ha!

vippy2017 fairy pools.jpg

2017 AIPP VIC - Silver Award

The stormy and incredibly dramatic Isle of Skye in Scotland definitely showed it’s power this day. The wind so fierce it was a struggle to stay standing and rain so hard and cold it was incredibly challenging to take a photograph! However I am delighted I didn’t give up and whilst the weather was crazy it also meant we were the only people at the Fairy Pools.
